Mexicali Rose Goes Bye Bye

Oakland’s legendary Mexican restaurant, Mexicali Rose, shocked its patrons when ownership announced on June 23 that the 92-year-old Oakland landmark would be shutting its doors for good.

Having served the citizens of Oakland for almost a century, many patrons descended on the restaurant to say goodbye to the staff and rehash old memories.

With lines going around the block on its last day, and with a wait time of over 5 hours to be seated for the last dinner service, ownership actually closed the dinner line at 3pm on June 29 for the last dinner service.

To date, no one is sure what will take its place, but considering the typical trend in Oakland right now, we’re betting the restaurant is torn down with the land being sold for a condo development.
