Unlike the San Francisco Carnival, Oakland Carnival focuses on the music of the Afro/Cuban/West Indies aspects of the diaspora.
Therefore, the majority of the dancing units and music tend to feature groups with a strong Oakland base, featuring mostly African-American, West Indies, and West African descent.
Also, unlike San Francisco Carnival, Oakland Carnival has a strong political theme of protecting Oakland natives from the perils of gentrification and economic displacement.
